Stridulum, Poland’s hottest export in darkwave is back with the long-awaited longplayer. Already with the Burial EP Marita Volodina and Arkadiy Berg convinced us of their skills, but with the debut “Soothing Tales Of Escapism” the duo exceeds all expectations and delivers a masterpiece.

Admittedly, we took some time with the review. But you will surely agree after the first listening to the longplayer, that the right words and superlatives for this album are hard to find and choose. Alone the variety that this album offers is indescribable. One wanders from heavy electro to minimalism to pop and wanders through all facets of the dark musical landscape. Cool, slow, almost ice cold parts are countered by warm dynamics and make the whole songs despite their “darkness” as varied as a rainbow in the summer rain. But not only the styles change, but also the times. Sometimes you float from the 80s to the next decades, only to arrive in the modern age and travel back to the good old days of New Wave. Ten songs of contrasts and opposites and yet everything feels like from one cast. There is fragility that at the same time bristles with strength. Diversity that is skillful and not overused. A wonderful concept that the two musicians have implemented 100%.

A clearly noticeable depth and dimensionality in the songs come not only from the wonderfully arranged, almost exclusively used electronic components, but also from the vocals. These wander like the music not only in the ear, but over the body and provide in addition to goose bumps also for longing and desire. A voice like you rarely hear. Marita Volodina is in a class of her own. Once she has captured the listener, she does not let him go for the whole album.

Ten songs to escape the current world, close your eyes to dream and drift. Songs that harmonize with the imagination and turn off the weary everyday life. You can dream a lot with the album, but you don’t have to, because dancing is possible as well as enjoying the sonic diversity with headphones. Stridulum aka Marita Volodina and Arkadiy Berg may like to be called insider tips by the scene, but those times should now be a thing of the past with this masterpiece. This band will accompany us for quite a long time.

Stridulum, Polens heißester Export in Sachen Darkwave ist zurück mit dem lang ersehnten Longplayer. Schon mit der Burial EP hatten Marita Volodina und Arkadiy Berg uns von ihrem Können überzeugt, doch mit dem Debüt “Soothing Tales Of Escapism” übertrifft das Duo alle Erwartungen und liefert ein Meisterstück ab.

Zugegeben, wir haben uns etwas Zeit gelassen mit dem Review. Doch ihr werdet nach dem ersten Hören des Longplayers uns sicherlich zustimmen, das die richtigen Worte und Superlative für dieses Album schwer zu finden und wählen sind. Alleine die Abwechslung die dieses Album bietet, ist unbeschreiblich. Man wandert von schwerem Elektro über Minimalismus zu Pop und wandert durch sämtliche Facetten der dunklen Musiklandschaft. Kühle, langsame, fast schon eiskalte Parts werden von warmen Dynamiken gekontert und machen die ganzen Songs trotz ihrer “Dunkelheit” so abwechslungsreich wie ein Regenbogen im Sommerregen. Aber nicht nur die Stile ändern sich, sondern auch die Zeiten. Mal schwebt man von den 80er in die nächsten Dekaden, nur um in der Moderne angekommen wieder zurück in die gute alte Zeit des New Wave zu reisen. Zehn Songs der Kontraste und Gegensätze und doch fühlt sich alles wie aus einem Guss an. Es gibt zerbrechliches, das zeitgleich vor Stärke strotzt. Vielfalt die gekonnt ist und nicht überstrapaziert. Ein wunderbares Konzept, das die beiden Musiker zu 100% umgesetzt haben.

Eine deutlich spürbare Tiefe und Dimensionalität in den Songs kommen aber nicht nur von den wunderbar arrangierten, fast ausschließlich verwendeten elektronischen Komponenten, sondern ebenso von den Vocals. Diese wandern wie die Musik nicht nur ins Ohr, sondern über den Körper und sorgen neben Gänsehaut auch für Sehnsucht und Verlangen. Eine Stimme wie man sie nur selten hört. Marita Volodina ist eine ganz eigene Klasse für sich. Wenn sie den Hörer einmal eingefangen hat, lässt sie ihn für das ganze Album nicht mehr los.

Zehn Songs um der aktuellen Welt zu entfliehen, die Augen zu schließen um zu träumen und sich treiben zu lassen. Songs die mit der Fantasie harmonieren und den überdrüssigen Alltag abschalten. Man kann mit dem Album viel träumen, muss man aber nicht, denn tanzen geht ebenso wie die klangliche Vielfalt mit Kopfhörern zu genießen. Stridulum aka Marita Volodina und Arkadiy Berg mögen gerne von der Szene Geheimtipp genannt werden, doch die Zeiten sollten mit diesem Meisterwerk nun der Vergangenheit angehören. Diese Band wird uns noch ganz lange begleiten.
