At the end of the year, time is a bit short and, as usual, the offer of new music is rather confusing due to the large number of releases. It’s hard to keep track even as a music lover or magazine. In this sea of good music we want to direct your eyes and ears to a very special treat. I’m Waving, Not Drowning by Matte Blvck, the “dark” trio from California’s second largest city San Diego.

Even if sun and easy lifestyle are the first things you associate with America’s Finest City, San Diego convinces with a lively music scene, especially in the area that is off the beaten track. At the top of the list are Alex Gonzales, Bidi Cobra and Daniel Corrales aka Matte Blvck, whose intense songs have generated a lot of positive buzz this year. After a few covers of successful hits by Depeche Mode (Stripped) and Co, the three musicians finally unleashed their own songs on the fans, which finally culminated in the release of their album.

An album of 8 tracks overflowing with uniqueness and darkness that makes our heart beat faster and lives up to the name of the band. Synths that are so heavy and bass-orientated as you rarely hear them. They don’t just touch you, they hit you with all their might, they push you through the songs. The songs get a bit brighter through the vocals, which nevertheless throw around with feeling and triggered emotions just like the synths. It sounds so distinctly adult, mature and somehow new, even if it is basically oriented to the past decades and also not stingy with 80s vibe. An explosive mixture of different styles tailor-made for dark souls like us. To dance, to enjoy or to test the quality of the home stereo, this album can do everything and comes with us to the top of the best albums 2020. Thanks to San Diego.

Zum Abschluss des Jahres wird die Zeit etwas knapp und wie gewohnt das Angebot an neuer Musik eher unübersichtlich durch die große Anzahl der Veröffentlichungen. Da fällt es schwer, selbst als Musikliebhaber oder Magazin den Überblick zu bewahren. In diesem ganzen Meer aus guter Musik wollen wir euere Augen und Ohren noch auf einen ganz besonderen Leckerbissen lenken. I´m Waving, Not Drowning von Matte Blvck, dem “dunklen” Trio aus Kaliforniens zweitgrößter Stadt San Diego.

Auch wenn Sonne und easy Lifestyle das erste ist was man mit Americas Finest City in Verbindung bringt, so überzeugt die Metropole doch vor allem durch eine lebhafte Musikszene, gerade auch im Bereich der Abseits vom üblichen Mainstream liegt. Ganz oben mit dabei sind Alex Gonzales, Bidi Cobra und Daniel Corrales aka Matte Blvck die mit ihren intensiven Songs in diesem Jahr für ordentlich positive Kritik gesorgt haben. Nach ein paar Covern erfolgreicher Hits von Depeche Mode (Stripped) und Co, hatten die Drei Musiker nun endlich auch eigene Songs auf die Fans losgelassen, was schlussendlich nun mit dem Release ihres Albums gipfelte.

Ein Album mit 8 Tracks, das vor Einzigartigkeit überquillt und mit einer Dunkelheit aufwartet die unser Herz schneller schlagen lässt und dem Namen der Band alle Ehre macht. Synths die so schwer und basslastig sind wie man sie selten hört. Sie berühren dich nicht nur einfach, sie treffen dich mit aller Wucht und prallen nicht etwa von Dir ab, nein sie schubsen dich durch die Songs. Etwas heller werden die Songs durch die Vocals, die dennoch mit Gefühl und ausgelösten Emotionen eben so um sich werfen wie die Synths. Es klingt so ausgesprochen erwachsen, reif und irgendwie neu, auch wenn es im Prinzip sich doch an den vergangenen Jahrzehnten orientiert und auch nicht mit 80s Vibe geizt. Eine explosive Mischung verschiedener Stile die maßgeschneidert sind für dunkle Seelen wie uns. Zum tanzen, zum genießen oder um Qualität der heimischen Stereoanlage zu testen, dieses Album kann alles und kommt bei uns mit an die Spitze der besten Alben 2020. Danke nach San Diego.
