New Album // Citizens Of Nowhere – 1919

Citzizen Of Nowhere. The name shaped the thoughts of the last weeks, because after the extraordinary release of “Singing to the Universe” and the announcement of a new longplayer we were blown away. As longtime fans of the band, waiting for the new content of the Brits became a real challenge. But the wait was more than worth it, as Citizen Of Nowhere is our favorite new album of 2021.

If you look back at the long history of the band, which formed already at the end of 1980, you will find, besides numerous extraordinary songs, also some tragedies that accompanied this band. After the reunion and the release of Bloodline, Mark Tighe succumbed to cancer after a short battle. Ex-member and bassist Steve Madden was once again featured with a track on the album Futurecide, released in April 2019, and also passed away shortly before the release. The large planned US tour burst like a soap bubble due to the Federal Shutdown and thereby missing visas. Although the bands were able to play some gigs in Latin America, the next stroke of fate came in December with the death of crew member Kev Holroyd. To top it all off, the worldwide end of live performances was triggered by Corona.

How strong the band is, shows that they do not let themselves down and with a new bass player as a complete quartet again dared to a new album. Nine tracks that make it clear how well the band fits together and sonically plays in the upper league. Not a simple cliché, but great variety. Not as dark as expected, but the songs don’t have to be, because Rio, Mick, Sam and Simon have done everything right here. Cheekily stolen from other genres and incorporated them into their own sound.

Borders is the opening track and shows immediately what you can expect. Solid drums with lots of basslines, present guitar sound and of course Rio’s voice make the sound an experience. No fumbling, no getting lost, just straight sound with heart and soul. Powerful and dynamic without wanting too much or presenting an overloaded sound storm. Every song is spot on. Borders sounds dark, Feels like Forever, for example, waits with a poppier note, Sweet Blue Murder starts with a catchy keyboard and mutates into a surprise. Then of course Singing To The Universe, a song that already has epic proportions of an anthem and even after the hundredth time a goose bumps run over the body. A true masterpiece.

As broad as the sound of the British is also the theme of the songs, populism is just as present as the influence of TV and Co. Here they put their finger into the open wounds of society and it has never sounded better.

Even if 1919 have gone through some changes through the almost four decades, the band makes a big step forward, but does not forget their roots. Modernity and past, a concept that works perfectly with Citizen of Nowhere. An album that you have to have.

Citzizen Of Nowhere. Der Name prägte die Gedanken der letzten Wochen, denn nach dem außergewöhnlichen Release von “Singing to the Universe” und der Ankündigung eines neuen Longplayers waren wir hin und weg. Als langjährige Fans der Band wurde das Warten auf den neuen Content der Briten eine echte Herausforderung. Aber das Warten hat sich mehr als gelohnt, denn Citizen Of Nowhere ist unser neues Lieblingsalbum 2021.

Blickt man auf die lange Geschichte der Band zurück, die sich bereits Ende 1980 gründete, so findet man neben zahlreichen außergewöhnlichen Songs auch einige Tragödien, die diese Band begleiteten. Nach der Wiedervereinigung und dem Release von Bloodline erlag Mark Tighe nach kurzem Kampf dem Krebs. Ex-Mitglied und Bassist Steve Madden war noch einmal mit einem Track auf dem im April 2019 veröffentlichten Album Futurecide zu finden und verstarb ebenfalls kurz vor der Veröffentlichung. Die groß geplante US-Tournee platze wie eine Seifenblase durch den Federal Shutdown und dadurch fehlende Visas. Zwar konnte die Bands einige Auftritte in Lateinamerika absolvieren, doch im Dezember erfolgte der nächste Schicksalsschlag durch den Tod von Crewmitglied Kev Holroyd. Zu allem dazu kam dann noch das durch Corona ausgelöste weltweite Ende der Live-Auftritte.

Wie stark die Band ist, zeigt das sie sich nicht unterkriegen lässt und mit neuem Bassist als wieder vollständiges Quartett sich an ein neues Album gewagt hat. Neun Tracks, die deutlich machen wie gut die Band zusammenpasst und klanglich in der oberen Liga mitspielt. Kein einfaches Klischee, sondern großartige Abwechslung. Nicht so dunkel wie erwartet, aber das müssen die Songs gar nicht sein, denn hier haben Rio, Mick, Sam und Simon alles richtig gemacht. Frech in anderen Genres geklaut und in den eigenen Sound mit einfließen lassen.

Borders heißt der Eröffnungtrack und zeigt gleich worauf man sich gefasst machen kann. Solide Drums mit viel Basslines, präsentem Gitarrensound und natürlich Rios Stimme machen den Sound zu einem Erlebnis. Kein hadern, kein verrennen, einfach geradlinigen Sound mit Herz und Seele. Wuchtig und dynamisch ohne zu viel zu wollen oder ein überladenes Soundgewitter zu präsentieren. Jeder Song ist punktgenau getroffen. Borders klingt dunkel, Feels like Forever wartet z.B. mit einer poppigeren Note auf, Sweet Blue Murder startet mit einem eingängien Keyboard und mutiert zur Überraschung. Dann natürlich Singing To The Universe, ein Song der schon epische Ausmaße einer Hymne besitzt und auch noch nach dem hundertsten Mal eine Gänsehaut über den Körper rennen lässt. Ein wahres Meisterwerk.

So breit gefächert wie der Sound der Briten ist auch die Thematik der Songs, Populismus ist ebenso gegenwärtig wie der Einfluss von TV und Co. Hier wird ganz gezielt der Finger in die offenen Wunden der Gesellschaft gelegt und besser hat es noch nie geklungen.

Auch wenn 1919 durch die fast vier Dekaden einigen Wechsel durchlebt haben, macht die Band einen großen Schritt nach vorne, vergisst dabei aber ihre Wurzeln nicht. Moderne und Vergangenheit, ein Konzept das bei Citizen of Nowhere vollkommen aufgeht. Ein Album das man haben muss.
