Darkness is the name of the new album by mastermind Pete Mills aka The Sweet Kill and shows all the talent of the musician. Ten songs that dig deep into the listener and leave an impression.

Already a few years ago we became aware of the musician from Los Angeles and had him as a guest a few times. Very gladly, because one notices his passion for music literally. A mixture of fun, a lot of ambition and of course skill. Who has dealt a little with The Sweet Kill, knows that a great fighting spirit behind the music. Music that is lived.

Already with the first song and namesake for the album you notice the basic structure of the album, which is indeed darker than the previous releases. Explosive post-punk, which of course lives from Pete. His dark, often soft but, when necessary, harder baritone vocals. Driving beats that combine perfectly with the synths and the strikingly coherent guitar riffs, building a wall of sound that packs a decent punch. But it wouldn’t be The Sweet Kill if, in addition to all the power, just as much emphasis was placed on versatility and complexity. Sound that is quickly absorbed and adapted by the listener. Good mood guaranteed, despite dark ambience. You quickly find yourself humming or singing the chorus and are always amazed at how quickly the songs take possession of you. Unexpectedly they return to your memory and sometimes stay there for hours. But it’s not just songs, it’s more. Something that is hard to describe, let’s call it “liveliness” and “soul” that live in the songs. Something that is often missing in today’s fast moving music landscape. Songs and albums that offer you something familiar, a refuge, a place where you can relax and block out the outside world. Dream, relax, recuperate. Darkness is such an album. On the other hand, you can also wonderfully empathize with the mood of the songs and that gives you the feeling of liveliness.

An absolutely great album, which for us personally is already one of the best albums of 2022.

Darkness heißt das neue Album von Mastermind Pete Mills aka The Sweet Kill und zeigt das ganze Talent des Musikers. Zehn Songs die sich tief im Hörer eingraben und Eindruck hinterlassen.

Schon vor einigen Jahren sind wir auf den Musiker aus Los Angeles aufmerksam geworden und hatten ihn bereits einige Male als Gast. Sehr gerne, denn man merkt ihm seine Leidenschaft für Musik förmlich an. Eine Mischung aus Spaß, viel Ehrgeiz und natürlich Können. Wer sich ein wenig mit The Sweet Kill auseinander gesetzt hat, der weiß das ein großer Kampfgeist hinter der Musik steht. Musik die gelebt wird.

Schon mit dem ersten Song und Namensgeber für das Album bemerkt man die Grundstruktur des Albums, das in der Tat dunkler ist als die vorhergegangenen Veröffentlichungen. Explosiver Post-Punk, der natürlich von Pete lebt. Seinem dunklen, oft weichen aber, wenn nötig auch härterem Bariton-Gesang. Treibende Beats die sich perfekt mit den Synths und den auffällig stimmigen Gitarren-Riffs verbinden und eine Wall of Sound aufbauen, die ordentlich Druck aufbaut. Aber es wäre nicht The Sweet Kill, wenn neben der ganzen Power genauso viel Wert auf die Vielseitigkeit und Vielschichtigkeit gelegt werden würde. Sound der schnell vom Hörer aufgesogen und adaptiert wird. Gute Laune garantiert, trotz dunklem Ambiente. Man ertappt sich schnell beim summen oder singen des Refrains und ist immer wieder erstaunt wie schnell die Songs Besitz von einem ergreifen. Unverhofft kehren sie in das Gedächtnis zurück und verbleiben dort manchmal über Stunden. Aber es sind ja auch nicht nur bloße Songs, es ist mehr. Etwas das schwer zu beschreiben ist, nennen wir es “Lebendigkeit” und “Seele” die in den Songs leben. Etwas, das man oftmals bei der heutigen, schnelllebigen Musiklandschaft vermisst. Songs und Alben die einem etwas Vertrautes bieten, eine Zuflucht, ein Ort wo man entspannen kann und die Außenwelt aussperren kann. Träumen, relaxen, erholen. Darkness ist ein solches Album. Auf der anderen Seite kann man sich aber auch wundervoll in die Stimmung der Songs einfühlen und das verschafft einem das Gefühl von Lebendigkeit.

Ein absolut großartiges Album, das für uns persönlich schon jetzt eins der besten Alben 2022 ist.
