With GAMES OF POWER the Canadian band HOME FRONT releases their next album after the masterpiece Think Of The Lie and show impressively that the predecessor was not a lucky strike. GAMES OF POWER is a mix of nostalgia and modernity, with the power of a full-blown hurricane.

Graeme Mackinnon (Voice, Guitar, Bass) and Clint Frazier (Synths, Keys, Drums & Programming) aka HOME FRONT first came to our attention early last year. We were just browsing Bandcamp for cool Canadian bands for a (still pending) article and after we had already sorted out the bands we knew, it was more soporific than interesting. Click, next track and actually we had already made the decision to go to bed. But Flaw in the Design ruined all plans. Suddenly wide awake, the sound simply knocked us off our feet. We ended up listening to the whole album and before we even got to the last song, we bought the limited edition of Think Of The Lie.

With great expectations, of course, we waited for the follow-up and as hoped, the journey continues where the last release left off. There are bands that do punk, others devote themselves to new wave, there are also bands that do pop. HOME FRONT somehow does it all and mixes it additionally with synths & Rock N Roll elements. A mix that sounds like a challenge at first, but seems to have been realized with ease. The result is 13 songs that are bursting with variety, speed and energy. Let’s take the second song of the album, Real Eyes, which has the makings of a dance floor killer and develops such a forward momentum that you can hardly keep up with it, or is simply rolled down by the force. Nation (ft. Cal Graham) is interwoven with oldschool punk through and through and sounds like a great anthem. Sing along and feel like 18 years old again included. Face Value unpacks the synths for this and shows that the band from Edmonton can also take it a little quieter. Nevertheless, the song is like all full of irrepressible energy.

Besides a lot of energy, variety and even more energy, the album is so extraordinary because it seems like a fountain of youth from the good old days, especially to the somewhat older listeners. We like to connect the songs of HOME FRONT with memories from our youth, the wild parties, the fashion style and the rebellious behavior that one was all too happy to show off. Freedom, wildness, life. GAMES OF POWER is the perfect soundtrack for that.

Only small drawback, the Limited Editon (we definitely need this one in our shelf) as well as the “normal” vinyl are already “Sold out” on the release day. Here you have to provide a few pieces again.

Mit GAMES OF POWER bringt die kanadische Band HOME FRONT nach dem Meisterwerk Think Of The Lie ihr nächstes Album heraus und zeigen eindrucksvoll, das der Vorgänger kein Glückstreffer war. GAMES OF POWER ist ein Mix aus Nostalgie und Moderne, mit der Power eines ausgewachsenen Hurricanes.

Auf Graeme Mackinnon (Voice, Guitar, Bass) und Clint Frazier (Synths, Keys, Drums & Programming) aka HOME FRONT sind wir erst Anfang letzten Jahres aufmerksam geworden. Wir stöberten gerade auf Bandcamp nach coolen kanadischen Bands für einen (immer noch ausstehenden) Artikel und nachdem wir die uns bekannten Bands schon aussortiert hatten, verlief es eher einschläfernd als interessant. Klick, nächster Titel und eigentlich hatten wir schon den Entschluss gefasst ins Bett zu gehen. Doch Flaw in the Design machte alle Pläne zunichte. Plötzlich hellwach, haute uns der Sound einfach aus den Schuhen. Wir hörten uns schließlich das ganze Album an und noch bevor wir zum letzten Song kamen, kauften wir die Limited Edition von Think Of The Lie.

Mit großen Erwartungen warteten wir natürlich auf den Nachfolger und wie erhofft geht die Reise dort weiter, wo das letzte Release aufgehört hatte. Es gibt Bands, die machen Punk, andere widmen sich dem New Wave, es gibt auch Bands die machen Pop. HOME FRONT macht irgendwie alles und mixt es zusätzlich noch mit Synths & Rock N Roll Elementen. Ein Mix, der sich zunächst nach Herausforderung anhört, aber scheinbar mit Leichtigkeit umgesetzt wurde. Herausgekommen sind 13 Songs die vor Abwechslung, Tempo und Energie strotzen. Nehmen wir den zweiten Song des Albums, Real Eyes, der das Zeug zum Tanzflächen-Killer hat und so ein Vorwärtsdrang entwickelt, das man kaum hinterherkommt, bzw von der Wucht einfach niedergewalzt wird. Nation (ft. Cal Graham) ist mit oldschool Punk durch und durch verwoben und klingt nach großer Hymne. Mitsingen und sich wieder wie 18 Jahre alt fühlen inklusive. Face Value packt dafür die Synths aus und zeigt, das die Band aus Edmonton es auch etwas ruhiger angehen kann. Trotzdem steckt der Song wie alle voll unbändiger Energie.

Neben viel Energie, Abwechslung und noch mehr Energie ist das Album vor allem so außergewöhnlich, weil es, vor allem den etwas älteren Hörern wie ein Jungbrunnen aus der guten alten Zeit vorkommt. Wir verbinden die Songs von HOME FRONT gerne mit Erinnerungen aus unserer Jugend, den wilden Partys, den Modestil und dem rebellischen Verhalten das man allzugerne zur Schau gestellt hat. Freiheit, Wildheit, Leben. GAMES OF POWER ist der optimale Soundtrack dafür.

Einziges kleines Manko, die Limited Editon (die brauchen wir definitiv noch in unserem Regal) sowohl die “normale” Vinyl sind schon am Release Tag “Sold out”. Hier müsst ihr noch einmal ein paar Stück bereit stellen.
