New Album // Lost In The Noise – Girlfriends and Boyfriends

When your favorite band announces a new release, it’s like Christmas, Easter and New Year all fall on the same day. Lost In The Noise is the new album by Girlfriends and Boyfriends and our wait for something new has finally come to an end.

Fallacy Of Fairness, the predecessor to the newly released Lost In The Noise album, had burned itself into our lives like no other album before it. We swear the album is still playing several times a week. Whether intentionally or not, it naturally sets expectations for the new album very high.

But we can all rest assured that the album’s special concept is quickly revealed on closer inspection. Loyal fans will recognize some familiar tracks from the past among the eight songs on the album. Like Hi-Tops, for example, we know from the Common Courtesy Vol.1 sampler from 2013. A project by Adam Fink (Drums Track 6) and Jascon Corbett (Actors), which brought the Vancouver music scene closer together and shows in an amazing way how musically positioned the metropolis is. A look at Bandcamp finally reveals the subtitle of the new album: Lost In The Noise:2009-2024.

The listener can expect a great cross-section of the work of Grant Minor (bass – vocals – synths – guitars), Peter Panovic (guitars – synths), Ben Lowe (guitars) and currently Ian Pierre Cardona (drums). A cross-section you rarely see, because the Canadian musicians have been through more genres than most people know. Post-punk, new wave, electroclash and lots of punk. They combined, they multiplied and created a sound that captures both the modern and the past in all its musical beauty. Better, they created the Girlfriends and Boyfriends sound. Unique. Not just a walk through life’s dark and light moments and a rollercoaster of emotions, but rather a journey back in time to one’s youth, when everything was still wild and full of energy.

The sound is far beyond multi-layered, never boring and already shows the early potential of the Canadians. Enormous landscapes of sound, but sophisticated and perfected down to the smallest detail. Crisp basslines, guitar solos and, of course, Grant Minor’s unmistakable voice. No song sounds like one before, saxophone is added, sometimes sharp synths are added and the next moment the song explodes and sweeps the listener away.

The masterpiece produced with the traditional label for good music “Midnight Mannequin Records” is of course available in many different variations. In very intense red or as a “Blue Ruin” version, which is no less great. You must be quick here, because “Sold Out” is already written boldly and clearly on some options. The fans know exactly what they want and luckily we were quick enough to order our personal highlight yesterday.

We’re already in love with the album and the only thing we’re really missing now is to see the guys live in Germany. We are eagerly waiting.

Wenn die Lieblingsband eine neue Veröffentlichung ankündigt, dann ist es als würde Weihnachten, Ostern und Neujahr auf den selben Tag fallen. Lost In The Noise heißt das neue Album von Girlfriends and Boyfriends und unser lang ersehntes Warten auf Neues hat nun endlich ein Ende

Fallacy Of Fairness, der Vorgänger zum neu erschienenen Lost In The Noise Album hatte sich wie kein anderes Album zuvor in unser Leben gebrannt. Wir schwören, das Album läuft noch immer mehrmals die Woche. Ob nun gewollt oder nicht, setzt es die Erwartungen an das neue Album natürlich sehr hoch.

Wir können aber alle beruhigt sein, das spezielle Konzept des Albums verrät sich beim genaueren hinsehen sehr schnell. Treue Fans sehen bei den acht Songs auf dem Album einige bekannte Titel aus der Vegangenheit. Wie zum Beispiel Hi-Tops, das wir vom Common Courtesy Vol.1 Sampler aus dem Jahr 2013 kennen. Einem Projekt von Adam Fink (Drums Track 6) und Jascon Corbett (Actors), das die Musikszene Vancouvers untereinander näher brachte und auf erstaunliche Weise zeigt wie musikalisch die Metropole aufgestellt ist. Ein Blick auf Bandcamp zeigt dann schlussendlich auch den Nebentitel des neuen Albums: Lost In The Noise:2009-2024.
Es erwartet den Hörer somit ein toller Querschnitt der Schaffens von Grant Minor (bass -vocals – synths – guitars), Peter Panovic (guitars – synths), Ben Lowe (guitars) und aktuell Ian Pierre Cardona (drums). Ein Durchschnitt wie man ihn selten sieht, denn die kanadischen Musiker sind durch mehr Genres gelaufen wie die meisten Menschen überhaupt kennen. Post-Punk, New Wave, Electroclash und jede Menge Punk. Sie kombinierten, sie multiplizierten und erschufen einen Sound, der sowohl die Moderne als auch die Vergangenheit in all ihrer musikalischen Schönheit einfängt. Besser noch, sie erschufen den Girlfriends and Boyfriends Sounds. Einzigartig. Nicht nur ein Spaziergang durch dunkle und helle Momente des Lebens und ein Wechselbad der Emotionen, sondern vielmehr eine Zeitreise in die Jugend einer selbst, als alles noch wilder und voller Energie war.

Der Sound ist gewohnt vielschichtig, niemals langweilig und zeigt schon das frühe Potential der Kanadier. Gewaltige Landschaften von Sound, jedoch bis ins kleinste Detail ausgeklügelt und perfektioniert. Knackige Basslines, Gitarrensolos und natürlich die unverkennbare Stimme von Grant Minor. Kein Lied hört sich an wie eins zuvor, man fügt Saxophon hinzu, mal scharfe Synths und zeigt sich gefühlvoll um im nächsten Moment regelrecht zu explodieren und den Hörer mit sich zu reißen.

Das mit dem Traditions-Label für gute Musik “Midnight Mannequin Records” hergestellte Meisterstück gibt es natürlich in vielen unterschiedlichen Variationen. In sehr intensivem Rot oder als “Blue Ruin” Version, die nicht weniger toll ist. Schnelles zugreifen ist hier Pflicht, denn “Sold Out” steht schon fett und deutlich bei einigen Optionen. Die Fans wissen genau was sie wollen und zum Glück waren wir schnell genug und haben unser persönliches Highlight schon gestern bestellt.

Wir sind jetzt schon verliebt in das Album und das einzige was uns jetzt noch wirklich fehlt, ist die Jungs in Deutschland live zu sehen. Wir warten sehnsüchtig.
