Black Angel are back with their third album and bring a breath of fresh air into the unfortunately dusty genre. Prince Of Darkness is the name of the album and is a clear contender for one of the best albums of the year, even beyond the genre of gothic rock.

If you like first-class gothic rock like we do, Black Angel is not a new term, the two albums before had already received tons of praise and the announcement of the new album made us very hopeful. Of course there are good bands in the genre and also first class ones, but it feels like the genre has been bobbling along for a few years without many great releases. A difficult task to deliver something that makes the fan community even raise their heads. Now comes Prince Of Darkness.

After the first run through of the album we were speechless at first. We sat down, smoked a cigarette or two and decided that we had to listen to the album with a lot more power. Why? Quite simply, because the album is made exactly for that. The 12 tracks beg for volume to burn the cutting riffs, crunchy basslines and vocals into your brain and shake you mercilessly. It grabs you and pushes you through different periods of “dark” music history while still keeping you in the here and now. No superfluous appendages, no superfluous cliché or wild experimentation. A highly focused, pure piece of goth rock. A textbook of how to make Goth Rock. And this band doesn’t need to fear any more comparisons with the old veterans of the genre. This band has finally secured a place in the Goth Rock hall of fame with this album.

Besides the sound, the story of the songs is also worth mentioning. But to anticipate this would be unfair and we leave this extraordinary experience to you. Here, however, you should definitely take a look at the album cover and read along. It’s a lot of fun.

Finally there is a little bit of cliché, but it has it in itself, the longplayer will probably still appear in blood-red vinyl and will be a real eye-catcher. Awesome.

Conclusion: Not only for fans an absolute must-buy.

Black Angel sind zurück mit ihrem dritten Album und bringen ordentlich frischen Wind ins leider angestaubte Genre. Prince Of Darkness heißt die heiße Scheibe und ist auch über das Genre Gothic Rock hinaus klarer Anwärter auf eines der besten Alben des Jahres.

Wer wie wir auf erstklassigen Gothic Rock steht, dem ist Black Angel kein neuer Begriff, die beiden Alben zuvor hatten schon Unmengen an Lob eingeheimst und die Ankündigung des neuen Albums machte uns große Hoffnungen. Natürlich gibt es gute Bands im Genre und eben auch erstklassige, doch gefühlt dümpelt das Genre schon seit einigen Jahren ohne viele großartige Releases vor sich hin. Eine schwierige Aufgabe etwas Abzuliefern das die Fangemeinde dazu veranlasst die Köpfe auch nur anzuheben. Nun kommt Prince Of Darkness.

Nach dem ersten Durchlauf des Albums waren wir erst einmal sprachlos. Wir setzten uns hin, rauchten ein, zwei Zigaretten und fassten den Entschluss das wir das Album mit ein wesentlich mehr Power hören mussten. Warum? Ganz einfach, weil das Album genau dafür gemacht ist. Die 12 Tracks betteln nach Lautstärke um die schneidenden Riffs, die knackigen Basslines und die Vocals in dein Hirn zu brennen und dich gnadenlos durchzuschütteln. Es greift dich und schubst dich durch verschiedene Zeiten der schwarzen Musikgeschichte und hält dich dennoch im Hier und Jetzt. Keine Überflüssigen Anhängsel, kein überflüssiges Klischee oder wilden Experimente. Ein hochkonzentriertes, reines Stück Goth Rock. Ein Lehrbuch. Und diese Band braucht keine Vergleiche mehr mit den alten Urgesteinen des Genres zu fürchten. Diese Band hat sich nun endgültig mit diesem Album einen Platz im Goth Rock Olymp gesichert.

Neben dem Sound, ist auch die Geschichte bzw. Thematik der Songs erwähnenswert. Diese Vorweg zu nehmen wäre aber unfair und wir überlassen euch diese außergewöhnliche Erfahrung. Hier sollte man aber auf jeden Fall einen Blick aufs Albumcover werfen und mitlesen. Es macht viel Spaß.

Zum Schluss gibts aber noch ein klein wenig Klischee, das es aber in sich hat, der Longplayer wird vermutlich noch in blutrotem Vinyl erscheinen und wird ein richtiger Hingucker werden.

Fazit: Nicht nur für Fans absoluter Pflichtkauf.
