If you’ve been into post-punk and deathrock for the last few years, you most likely haven’t passed by the Californian quintet ESSES, because the EP “Offering” released in 2018 was an absolute musical treat. Bloodletting For The Lonely is the name of the successor and is with its nine songs an absolute masterpiece of dark musical art. No wonder then that ESSES has emerged as one of the hottest and most popular acts not only in the USA.

Formed in 2014, Miss Kel (Vocals, Lyrics), Dawn Hills (Guitars), Skot B (Guitars), Scout Leight (Bass) and Kevin Brown (Drums) have developed their very own signature sound over time. With very dark atmospheres and incredibly intense emotions, the quintet draws the listener under its spell and does not let him move on so quickly. The crisp bass emulates the thumping drums. Angry guitars buzz around the listener. All this makes the sound grow into unusual dimensions. A wonderful wall of music that hits the listener. The whole sound is rounded off to perfection by the beguiling voice of Miss Kel which could not fit better.

Thematically, the musicians draw us with Bloodletting For The Lonely into a dark, deep musical dream that deals with human psychology. Memories are dealt with as well as mental health. Aspects that make the listener think and perhaps address their own experiences.

Deathrock used to be called unstructured, too wild and immature, but this album will silence all critics, because everything is arranged to the second and unfolds its full effect. A milestone, a work of art. A textbook for deathrock.

Wer sich die letzten Jahre mit Post-Punk und Deathrock beschäftigt hat, der ist sehr wahrscheinlich an dem kalifornischen Quintett ESSES nicht vorbei gekommen, denn die 2018 erschienene EP “Offering” war ein absoluter musikalischer Leckerbissen. Bloodletting For The Lonely heißt der Nachfolger und ist mit seinen neun Songs ein absolutes Meisterwerk der dunklen musikalischen Kunst. Kein Wunder also, das sich ESSES als einer der heißesten und beliebtesten Acts nicht nur in den USA entwickelt hat.

2014 gegründet, haben sich Miss Kel (Vocals, Lyrics), Dawn Hills (Guitars), Skot B (Guitars), Scout Leight (Bass) und Kevin Brown (Drums) über die Zeit ihren ganz eigenen, unverkennbaren Sound entwickelt. Mit sehr dunklen Atmosphären und unglaublich intensiven Emotionen zieht das Quintett den Hörer in seinen Bann und lässt ihn auch nicht mehr so schnell weiterziehen. Der knackige Bass, der pochend mit den ebenfalls hypnotisierenden Drums um die Wette eifert und die dazu hervorragend passenden wütend durch die Luft schwirrenden Gitarren lassen den Sound schon in gigantische Ausmaße wachsen. Eine wunderbare Wand aus Musik die den Hörer trifft. Abgerundet zur Perfektion wird der ganze Sound durch die betörende Stimme von Miss Kel die besser nicht passen könnte.

Thematisch ziehen die Musiker uns mit Bloodletting For The Lonely in einen dunklen, tiefen musikalischen Traum der sich mit der menschlichen Psychologie beschäftigt. Erinnerungen werden ebenso behandelt wie die psychische Gesundheit. Aspekte die den Hörer zum nachdenken anregen und vielleicht auch eigene Erlebnisse ansprechen.

Deathrock wurde früher gerne als strukturlos, zu wild und unausgereift bezeichnet, dieses Album wird alle Kritiker verstummen lassen, denn hier ist alles bis auf die Sekunde arrangiert und entfaltet genau dadurch seine volle Wirkung. Ein Meilenstein, ein Kunstwerk. Ein Lehrbuch für Deathrock.
