The Dortmund duo Isla Ola has been an integral part of the “dark” scene in the Ruhr area for years. With their unmistakable sound, which is especially notable for its emotion and great depth, Jesmari and Stefan have built up a steadily growing international fan base. This year Isla Ola are back with a new album and show what class they have. Nebelmond is dark, emotional and yet also suitable for dancing. Exactly what the fans have been eagerly awaiting. Time for us to ask the duo a few questions.
Congratulations! Your long-awaited album is just around the corner and as we could see on social platforms, fans are eagerly anticipating May 07. How does it feel to experience so much positive energy in the run-up?
Jesmari: You have in any case the feeling to do the right thing and of course you are happy about such a feedback. We hope this will continue until we can go live again.
Stefan: Of course, it’s very nice to hear that people like what we’re doing. I must admit that it is nevertheless also unfamiliar and I have to get used to it.
You have your 10th anniversary next year if I’m right, that’s something special in today’s fast moving times, especially in the music business. How has the time influenced Isla Ola and “Nebelmond”?
Jesmari: I would say we learned more and more. We tried different things to find ourselves first and to become clear who we are as Isla Ola. Our album Nebelmond is so to say the result of this self-discovery process.
A self-discovery process that sounds very complex in the result. While listening to your new album, we immediately noticed that the songs are characterized by their depth and complexity, but are also danceable. A happy medium that many do not manage, what is your secret?
Stefan: Personally, I often find it difficult to find that middle ground you’re talking about. But that’s what makes it so interesting to work on songs.
Jesmari: Sometimes it’s also important to give the songs time. We often put certain songs aside and work on them again after a while. We just see what feels right and try to work freely and without pressure.
A look at the tracklist of Nebelmond reveals two English language tracks “Why Don’t You Come Around” and “Grave Of The Future”, how can you imagine the creation process in general, deciding on a language for a song?
Jesmari: Both songs were written before I started writing German lyrics. Over time I realized that I can express myself better in German. I can convey my thoughts and feelings much more authentically that way. But I can also imagine that there will be an English song again someday. But I make that completely dependent on the feeling.
Which brings us to the topic of the songs and an interesting point we have read. You leave the interpretation of the lyrics to the fans and say very little about it. Nevertheless, we would be interested in how you choose the themes of your songs, or what tempts you to write a song.
Jesmari: I think I have to mention that I write the texts alone. Themes I do not choose, they usually just come to me.
These are memories, emotional states, everything that moves me and everything I think about. I find it nice when other people can find themselves in it and make their own story out of it.
The cover of the new album, matching the title appears in a beautiful blue and also your stage shows are predominantly in blue with plenty of fog. What meaning does the color blue and generally the optical part have to your music?
Stefan: Cool that you noticed that. Exactly, the blue cover was chosen on purpose. The color blue underlines our music and the coldness it brings quite well.
Jesmari: When we sink into blue fog at our live concerts, it’s a reference to our band name. The blue fog symbolizes, so to speak, the wave in which we disappear as Isla Ola.
Speaking of concerts. Releasing a new album and bringing the new songs to the fans due to the general covid situation must hurt incredibly, right?
Stefan: Of course it’s a pity not to be able to play concerts at the moment. But the thought of what will be again in the future is much more present with us. We use the time to work on new songs and to support the album.
It’s nice that you approach the situation with such a positive attitude. At the moment you see livestreams on every corner, is that an alternative for you?
Jesmari: We also did one last year. But I personally think it’s not an alternative in the long run. You just can’t get the feeling of what it would have been live.
Stefan: Of course, livestreams are no substitute for real concerts. Nevertheless, I think livestreams are great. I would even assume that the concept of concert livestreams will remain once the situation has eased again.
Two important points that we feel the same way. We have become very accustomed to listening to musicians from our couch at home. On the other hand, nothing beats the energy and dynamics of a live concert. With Nebelmond you now release an album that will bring a lot of joy to the fans and yet you are working on new songs again. What can we expect from you in general in the future? Do you already have concrete plans?
Stefan: There are no concrete plans for e.g. a next album yet. I think that would be a bit hasty. But we are continuously working on new songs.
Jesmari: The next plans are to play a lot of live concerts, if this is possible again, we are really looking forward to it!

Das Dortmunder Duo Isla Ola zählt schon seit Jahren zum festen musikalischen Bestandteil der „dunklen“ Szene des Ruhrgebiets. Mit ihrem unverkennbaren Sound der vor allem durch seine Emotionen und großartigen Tiefe auffällt, haben Jesmari und Stefan eine stetig wach-sende internationale Fangemeinde aufgebaut. In diesem Jahr sind Isla Ola mit einem neuen Album zurück und zeigen welche Klasse sie besitzen. Nebelmond ist düster, emotional und dennoch auch zum Tanzen geeignet. Genau das, was die Fans sehnsüchtig erwartet haben. Zeit für uns dem Duo ein paar Fragen zu stellen.
Herzlichen Glückwunsch! Eurer lang erwartetes Album steht vor der Tür und wie wir auf den sozialen Plattformen sehen konnten, fiebern die Fans eifrig dem 07. Mai entgegen. Wie fühlt es sich an, wenn man im Vorfeld so viel positive Energie erfährt?
Jesmari: Man hat aufjedenfall das Gefühl, das Richtige zu tun und natürlich freut man sich über so ein Feedback. Wir hoffen das bleibt bestehen, bis wir dann wieder live gehen können.
Stefan: Das ist natürlich sehr schön zu hören, dass das was wir da machen, Leuten gefällt. Ich muss gestehen, dass es trotzdem auch ungewohnt ist und ich mich da erst dran gewöhnen muss.
Ihr habt nächstes Jahr euer 10. Jubiläum wenn ich richtig liege, das ist in der heutigen schnelllebigen Zeit, vor allem im Musikbusiness schon etwas besonderes. Wie hat die Zeit Isla Ola und “Nebelmond” beeinflusst?
Jesmari: Ich würde sagen, wir haben mehr und mehr dazu gelernt. Wir haben verschiedene Sachen ausprobiert, um uns erstmal zu finden und uns klar zu werden wer wir als Isla Ola überhaupt sind. Unser Album Nebelmond ist sozusagen das Ergebnis aus diesem Selbstfindungsprozess.
Ein Selbstfindungsprozess der sich im Ergebnis sehr vielschichtig anhört. Beim Probehören eures neuen Albums fiel uns sofort auf, das sich die Songs vor allem durch ihre Tiefe und Komplexität auszeichnen, aber ebenso tanzbar sind. Ein goldener Mittelweg den viele nicht schaffen, wo liegt euer Geheimnis?
Stefan: Ich persönlich finde es oft schwierig diesen Mittelweg, von dem du sprichst, zu finden. Gerade das macht es aber auch so interessant an Songs zu arbeiten.
Jesmari: Manchmal ist es auch wichtig den Songs Zeit zu geben. Bei uns kommt es auch öfter vor, dass wir bestimmte Lieder erst einmal bei Seite legen und nach einer Weile wieder dran arbeiten. Wir schauen halt was sich wann richtig anfühlt und versuchen ganz frei und ohne Druck zu arbeiten.
Ein Blick auf die Tracklist von Nebelmond offenbart zwei englischsprachige Titel “Why Don´t You Come Around” und “Grave Of The Future”, wie kann man sich den Entstehungsprozess im Allgemeinen vorstellen, sich für eine Sprache eines Songs zu entscheiden?
Jesmari: Die beiden Songs sind entstanden bevor ich angefangen habe deutsche Texte zu schreiben. Ich hab mit der Zeit gemerkt, dass ich mich in deutsch einfach besser ausdrücken kann. Meine Gedanken und Gefühle kann ich so viel authentischer rüberbringen. Ich kann mir aber auch vorstellen, dass es irgendwann wieder einen englischen Song geben wird. Das mache ich aber ganz vom Gefühl abhängig.
Womit wir bei der Thematik wären und einen interessanten Punkt aufgreifen würden den wir gelesen haben. Interpretationen zu den Texten überlasst ihr den Fans und äußert euch nur ganz wenig dazu. Dennoch würde uns interessieren, wie ihr die Thematiken eurer Songs aussucht, bzw. was euch dazu verleitet einen Song zu schreiben.
Jesmari: Dazu muss ich glaub ich erwähnen, dass ich die Texte alleine verfasse. Thematiken suche ich mir nicht aus, sie kommen meistens einfach zu mir.
Das sind Erinnerungen, Gefühlszustände, alles was mich bewegt und alles worüber ich mir Gedanken mache. Ich finde es schön, wenn sich andere Leute darin wiederfinden können und ihre ganz eigene Geschichte draus machen.
Das Cover des neuen Albums, passend zum Titel erscheint in einem herrlichen Blau und auch eure Bühnenshows sind überwiegend in Blau gehalten mit reichlich Nebel. Welche Bedeutung hat die Farbe Blau und generell der optische Part zu eurer Musik?
Stefan: Cool, dass dir das aufgefallen ist. Genau, das blaue Cover wurde absichtlich so gewählt. Die Farbe Blau unterstreicht unsere Musik und die Kälte, die sie mit sich bringt, ganz gut.
Jesmari: Wenn wir bei unseren live Konzerten in blauem Nebel versinken, ist das eine Referenz zu unserem Bandnamen. Der blaue Nebel symbolisiert sozusagen die Welle, in der wir als Isla Ola verschwinden.
Da wir gerade bei Konzerten sind. Ein neues Album zu veröffentlichen und aufgrund der allgemeinen Covid-Situation die neuen Lieder an die Fans zu bringen muss unglaublich schmerzen oder?
Stefan: Klar ist es schade momentan keine Konzerte spielen zu können. Aber der Gedanke, was in der Zukunft wieder sein wird, ist bei uns viel präsenter. Wir nutzen die Zeit um an neuen Songs zu arbeiten und das Album zu supporten.
Schön das ihr mit einer solch positiven Einstellung an die Situation heran geht. Im Moment sieht man an jeder Ecke Livestreams, für euch eine Alternative?
Jesmari: Wir haben letztes Jahr auch einen gemacht. Aber ich persönlich finde, dass es auf die Dauer keine Alternative ist. Man kann an das Feeling, was es live gegeben hätte, einfach nicht heran kommen.
Stefan: Natürlich sind Livestreams kein Ersatz für echte Konzerte. Trotzdem finde ich Livestreams super. Ich würde sogar vermuten, dass das Konzept Konzert-Livestream auch erhalten bleiben wird, wenn die Lage sich wieder entspannt hat.
Zwei wichtige Punkte die wir so auch empfinden. Man hat sich schon sehr daran gewöhnt Musikern von der heimischen Couch aus zu lauschen. Auf der anderen Seite geht natürlich nichts über Energien und Dynamiken eines Live-Konzerts. Mit Nebelmond erscheint jetzt ein Album, das den Fans viel Freude bereiten wird und doch arbeitet ihr wieder an neuen Songs. Was können wir denn generell von euch in Zukunft erwarten? Habt ihr da schon konkrete Pläne?
Stefan: Konkrete Pläne für z.B. ein nächstes Album gibt es noch nicht. Das wäre denke ich auch ein bisschen vorschnell. Wir arbeiten aber kontinuierlich an neuen Songs.
Jesmari: Die nächsten Pläne sind aufjedenfall ganz viele live Konzerte zu spielen, wenn dies wieder möglich ist, da freuen wir uns schon richtig drauf!
