A wonderful masterpiece comes these days from Belgium and is called Tabula Rasa. It is the latest album of the band A Slice Of Life, which already convinces with its extraordinary sound since 2016. With the new 12 songs they show their full potential and are hot contenders for the best post-punk album 2022.
Looking back, it was some time ago when we first met singer Dirk Vreys (then on the road with his side project The ObsCure) and he told us about his band A Slice Of Life. Curious as we were, we listened through the band’s songs and were amazed at how well they fit into our musical tastes. We immediately fell in love with the song Restless Gods and it is still a regular guest in current playlists.
Curious, we followed the band’s activities and looked forward to their first live experience at the Summer Event in Belgium, where they performed alongside bands like Your Life On Hold or Diary Of Dreams. An experience we still look back on with pleasure, because the guys don’t just make music, they live music.
Now, with no less than 12 songs, Dirk Vreys (vocals), Guy Wilssens (guitar), Wim Kempenaers (guitar), Nelson Da Silva (bass), François-Xavier Reimeringer (drums) and Emmanuel Schaeverbeke (keys) are one step further and have created something really great. To give the album a direction or even to assign it to a genre is very difficult, because besides post-punk they like to vary to some goth rock or more or less 80s vibes. One could gladly refer to the heroes of the old school again to classify the band, but that would not be fair especially with the Belgians, because despite the small similarities to other bands, the band is independent down to the smallest detail and a trendsetter instead of a copy.
Already with the first song of the album, 2 Faced, you can fully convince yourself of the quality and skill of the band. Dirk’s unmistakable, energetic voice that makes you wonder with your mouth open and captivates you for all eternity. No escape. The guitar duo with a bit of a shoegaze vibe paired with the bass, beats and keys really push and grow beyond themselves into a huge landscape of sounds. It’s a song that develops rapidly and gets the listener off their feet with its dynamics. A multi-layered construct with countless niches and surprises.
Of course, we could now break down each song and dissect for you, but where is the fun and surprise, when you´re suddenly confronted with various moods, the urge to dance or once again falls silent, because the song simply rolls over you. One thing can be said for sure, the band is on its way to play itself into the hearts of the fans and hopefully soon get the recognition it deserves. The album is outstandingly strong, successful to the last detail and a shining star in the post-punk sky. As said, a trendsetter and absolute buy recommendation.
As a note, we would like to emphasize once again the live qualities of the guys. An experience of dynamics, pure energy and you can really feel how the spark jumps over to the concert visitors. Ein wunderbares Meisterwerk kommt die Tage aus Belgien und heißt Tabula Rasa. Es ist das neuste Album der Band A Slice Of Life, die schon seit 2016 mit ihrem außergewöhnlichem Sound überzeugt. Mit den neuen 12 Songs zeigen sie ihr ganzes Potential und sind heißer Anwärter auf das beste Post-Punk Album 2022.
Wenn wir zurückblicken ist es schon einige Zeit her, als wir das erste Mal Sänger Dirk Vreys begegneten (damals unterwegs mit seinem Nebenprojekt The ObsCure) und er uns von seiner Band A Slice Of Life erzählte. Neugierig wie wir waren hörten wir uns durch die Songs der Band und waren verblüfft wie gut sie in unseren Musikgeschmack passten. In den Song Restless Gods hatten wir uns sofort verliebt und ist noch immer ein regelmäßiger Gast in aktuellen Playlists.
Neugierig verfolgten wir die Aktivitäten der Band uns freuten uns auf das erste Live Erlebnis auf dem Summer-Event in Belgien, wo sie neben Bands wie Your Life On Hold oder Diary Of Dreams auftraten. Ein Erlebnis, an das wir noch gerne zurückblicken, denn die Jungs machen nicht nur Musik, sie leben Musik.
Jetzt, mit gleich 12 Songs, sind Dirk Vreys (Gesang), Guy Wilssens (Gitarre), Wim Kempenaers (Gitarre), Nelson Da Silva (Bass), François-Xavier Reimeringer (Drums) und Emmanuel Schaeverbeke (Keys) einen Schritt weiter und haben etwas richtig Großes erschaffen. Dem Album eine Richtung zu geben oder gar einem Genre zuzuweisen fällt sehr schwer, denn neben dem Post-Punk variert man gerne zu etwas Goth Rock oder mehr oder weniger 80s Vibes. Man könnte gerne wieder die Helden der alten Schule heranziehen um die Band etwas einzuordnen, doch wäre das gerade bei den Belgiern nicht fair, denn trotz der kleinen Ähnlichkeiten zu anderen Bands ist die Band bis in das kleinste Detail eigenständig und ein Trendsetter statt Kopie.
Bereits mit dem ersten Song des Albums, 2 Faced, kann man sich vollends von der Qualität und dem Können der Band überzeugen. Dirks unverkennbare, energiegeladene Stimme die einen mit offenen Mund staunen lässt und für alle Ewigkeit fesselt. Kein Entkommen. Das Gitarren-Duo mit ein wenig Shoegaze Vibe, gepaart mit dem Bass, den Beats und Keys machen ordentlich Druck und wachsen über sich hinaus zu einer riesigen Landschaft aus Sounds. Ein Song, der sich rapide entwickelt und mit seiner Dynamik den Hörer von den Beinen holt. Ein vielschichtiges Konstrukt mit unzähligen Nischen und Überraschungen.
Natürlich könnten wir jetzt jeden Song aufschlüsseln und für euch sezieren, doch wo bleibt da der Spaß und die Überraschung, wenn man urplötzlich mit diversen Stimmungen, dem Drang zu Tanzen oder mal wieder verstummt, weil einen der Song einfach überrollt. Eins kann man jedoch ganz klar sagen, die Band ist auf dem Weg sich in die Herzen der Fans zu spielen und hoffentlich bald die Anerkennung zu bekommen die sie verdient. Das Album ist überragend stark, bis ins letzte Detail gelungen und ein leuchtender Stern am Post-Punk Himmel. Wie gesagt, ein Trendsetter und absolute Kaufempfehlung.
Als Anmerkung möchten wir noch einmal die Live-Qualitäten der Jungs hervorheben. Ein Erlebnis aus Dynamik, purer Energie und man spürt regelrecht wie der Funke auf die Konzertbesucher überspringt.
