New Album // -ISH – Neonpocalypse

Solo projects are popping up like mushrooms at the moment. Many are good, some not so good and really outstanding solo projects are rare. One of these really successful projects is Neonpocalypse by Alex Svenson, who most people might know as bassist and singer of the Swedish post-punk formation Then Comes Silence. His debut is first class musical delight.

After some time ago already Hugo Zombie, also Then Comes Silence, released his album with much success, we were not really surprised by the announcement of Alex Svenson to also enter solo paths, but curious how the sound of the Swede would sound.
Starting with the first song “Broken Circles”, we pressed the pause button after 20 seconds and took our headphones out of the drawer. The first few seconds were indication enough of what was going to happen next in the song. Finally with headphones on, we dived undisturbed into this huge cosmos of sounds. A wonderfully multi-layered landscape that holds just as many small nuances as secrets that reveal themselves only at the second and third time listening. A world in which you can and want to lose yourself. Synths and beats harmonize with the unmistakable voice of Alex and send waves of goosebumps over the listener. Pure musical pleasure, which you can not do justice with words.
Game Over is the second song already more marked by the “bassist” handwriting, which we mean completely as a praise. Because the song lives from the bass. Alex varies it, lets the bass dance more than alive and clearly through the song and forms the other components around it in a clever way. Very successful as we find, because even so the second song becomes a musical experience.
The Light, the song with which the album was announced, is the song to dance to. Crisp, cheeky and with a snappy beat, the song tastes like a club and dance floor. Quickly comes movement in the limbs and the chorus sits in seconds in the listener. A great chance to escape the song exists at no time. I hope the song will find its rightful place on dance floors after all the lockdowns and quarantines.
Atmospheric, darker and more emotional it continues with the fourth song Lips, which again reveals an incredible depth. Quieter but no less intense Alex shows that he can also create a lot of feeling and emotion through his songs and transports them safely to the listener.
As an encore there are two great mixes to the new songs. Broken Circles got a new look by Ash Code, who are not only convincing with their own music, but also with their knack for first class remixes. The second remix was made by Kurs and gives the song something special and remarkable.

-ISH impressively shows the musical talent of Alex Svenson and turns out to be a great debut album. Even if you can listen to it like any album quite easy, it unfolds its really great strength when you deal with it. You have to feel it, whether you let the bass slam around your ears or pay tribute to all the nuances via headphones.

Solo Projekte schießen im Moment wie Pilze aus dem Boden. Viele sind gut, manche weniger gut und wirklich überragende Solo-Projekte sind rar. Eines dieser wirklich gelungenen Projekte ist Neonpocalypse von Alex Svenson, den die meisten als Bassist und Sänger der schwedischen Post-Punk Formation Then Comes Silence kennen dürften. Sein Debüt ist erstklassiger musikalischer Genuss.

Nachdem vor einiger Zeit bereits Hugo Zombie, ebenfalls Then Comes Silence, mit viel Erfolg sein Album veröffentlichte, waren wir von der Ankündigung von Alex Svenson, ebenfalls Solo Pfade zu betreten nicht wirklich überrascht, aber gespannt wie sich der Sound des Schwedens anhören würde.
Als wir mit dem ersten Song “Broken Circles” begannen, drückten wir nach 20 Sekunden den Pause Button und holten unsere Kopfhörer aus der Schublade. Die ersten Sekunden waren schon Hinweis genug, was sich weiteres im Song abspielen würde. Endlich mit Kopfhörern auf, tauchten wir dann ungestört in diesen riesigen Kosmos aus Klängen ein. Eine Wunderbar vielschichtige Landschaft die ebensoviele kleine Nuancen bereithält wie Geheimnisse, die sich erst beim zweiten und dritten Mal hören offenbaren. Eine Welt in der man sich verlieren kann und möchte. Synths und Beats harmonieren mit der unverkennbaren Stimme von Alex und schicken Wellen von Gänsehaut über den Hörer. Purer musikalischer Genuss, den man mit Worten nicht gerecht wird.
Game Over ist als zweiter Song schon mehr von der “Bassisten” Handschrift gekennzeichnet, was wir vollkommen als Lob meinen. Denn der Song lebt vom Bass. Alex variiert ihn, lässt ich mehr als lebendig und deutlich durch den Song tanzen und formt die anderen Komponenten auf geschickte Weise um ihn herum. Sehr gelungen wie wir finden, denn auch so wird der zweite Song zu einem musikalischen Erlebnis.
The Light, der Song mit dem das Album angekündigt wurde, ist der Song zum tanzen. Knackig, frech und mit flotten Beat schmeckt der Song nach Club und Tanzfläche. Schnell kommt Bewegung in die Gliedmaßen und der Refrain sitzt sekundenschnell im Hörer fest. Eine große Chance sich dem Song zu entziehen besteht zu keiner Zeit. Ich hoffe, das der Song nach den ganzen Lockdowns und Quarantänen seinen rechtmäßigen Platz auf den Tanzflächen finden wird.
Atmosphärischer, dunkler und gefühlvoller geht es dann mit dem vierten Song Lips weiter, der vor wieder eine unglaubliche Tiefe offenbart. Ruhiger aber nicht minder intensiv zeigt Alex das er auch viel Gefühl und Emotionen durch seine Songs erschaffen kann und sie sicher zum Hörer transportiert.
Als Zugabe gibt es noch zwei tolle Mixe zu den neuen Songs. Broken Circles erhielt ein neues Gewand von Ash Code, die nicht nur mit ihrer eigenen Musik überzeugen, sondern auch mit ihrem Händchen für erstklassige Remixe. Der zweite Remix wurde von Kurs gefertigt und gibt dem Song etwas besonderes.

-ISH zeigt eindrucksvoll das musikalische Talent von Alex Svenson und entpuppt sich als großartiges Debut Album. Auch wenn man es wie jedes Album ganz easy hören kann, entfaltet es seine wirklich große Stärke wenn man sich mit ihm beschäftigt. Man muss es fühlen, sei es das man sich den Bass um die Ohren knallen lässt oder via Kopfhörern den ganzen Nuancen Tribut zollt.
