When Dead Astronauts bring something new onto the market, music lovers, even the older ones, like to turn into little children standing in front of Santa Claus for the first time. When, as with the latest work “Silhouettes”, a whole album is waiting to be heard, one or the other eye gets moist. Quiet places are sought out to test the album extensively, several times, and everyday life is simply pushed to the side.
The fascination of the musicians can be quickly explained, but this masterful balancing act of styles remains a novelty that only the band from the Emerald City can master. The cool, darker “here and now” of the listeners who like to surround themselves with post-punk is served by the musicians as well as the hidden child in the fans who remembers the good old days when synth still came out of the C64 or Amiga. A perfect mixture to not only wrap the listener around their finger but also to win them over as loyal fans.

To describe the effect of the 12 songs of Silhouettes, on the other hand, is a challenge that puts even the most skilled writers to the test. The complexity of sounds that form a wonderful symbiosis with the vocals and are so full of the smallest nuances of life and energy that it is almost impossible to put into simple words. The abundance of emotions and the goosebumps that run over the whole body alone make words seem an inappropriate form of expression. A warm summer thunderstorm, barefoot through a wet meadow, the first kiss, would be rudimentary equivalents that give a rough direction.

Jared, Florence and Slade not only create their own cosmos, but also set the bar for the best album of 2021 in the genre almost unattainably high in the first month of the year.

Wenn Dead Astronauts etwas neues auf den Markt bringen, dann werden Musikliebhaber, auch die höheren Alters, gerne wieder zu kleinen Kindern die das erste Mal vor dem Weihnachtsmann stehen. Wenn dann, wie mit dem neusten Werk “Silhouettes” noch ein ganzes Album darauf wartet gehört zu werden, wird auch schon mal das ein oder andere Auge feucht. Es werden ruhige Orte aufgesucht um das Album ausgiebig, mehrmals zu testen und der Alltag einfach an die Seite geschoben.
Die Faszination der Musiker kann man zwar schnell erklären, aber diesen meisterhaften Spagat der Stile bleibt ein Novum, das nur die Band aus der Smaragdstadt meistern kann. Das kühle, dunklere “Hier und Jetzt” der Hörer, die sich gerne mit Post-Punk umgeben bedienen die Musiker ebenso wie das versteckte Kind in den Fans, welches sich an die guten, alten Zeiten erinnert als Synth noch aus dem C64 oder Amiga kam. Eine perfekte Mischung also um den Hörer nicht nur um den Finger zu wickeln sondern auch als treue Fans zu gewinnen.

Die Wirkung der 12 Songs von Silhouettes dagegen zu beschreiben ist eine Herausforderung die auch die gekonntesten Schreiber auf eine harte Probe stellt. Die Vielschichtigkeit aus Klängen die eine wundervolle Symbiose mit den Vocals eingehen und so voller kleinster Nuancen aus Leben und Energie bestehen in schnöde Worte fassen zu wollen ist schier unmöglich. Alleine die Fülle an ausgelösten Emotionen und die Gänsehaut die über den ganzen Körper wandert lässt Worte als nicht passende Ausdrucksform erscheinen. Ein warmes Sommergewitter, Barfuß durch eine nasse Wiese, der erste Kuss, wären ansatzweise Äquivalente die eine grobe Richtung vorgeben.

Jared, Florence und Slade erschaffen nicht nur einen eigenen Kosmos, sondern setzen schon im ersten Monat des Jahres die Messlatte für das beste Album 2021 im Genre fast unerreichbar hoch.
