THE EXCLUDED’S INTERNATIONAL ACTIVISM
From a radical perspective, evidently and very much in line with their ideals, brothers Daniel and David decided to form The Excluded, a punk band with Ska overtones, a few years ago. They managed to obtain a special sound, which when experienced live, overflows with both energy and fury at the same time, a phenomenon that I like to call cathartic.
The band is currently made up of David (Vocals), Dany (Guitar), Poncho (Bass), & Pats (Drums). With the support of Bam Records they recorded their first album in 2010, entitled Working Class Punx & Skins United, where they capture their complete repudiation of international policies that trample the rights of the labor movement around the world.
It is always a victory when a Mexican band is recognized internationally and undoubtedly behind this fact there is a lot of work and effort.
So as soon as I heard the news that The Excluded are going on a European tour, I was really happy. Dany, with whom I have shared talks and more than one beer, agreed to give me an interview.
Talk a bit about the history of The Excluded. How did the band come about?
The band rose from the socio-political discontent that has been experienced in Latin America for centuries. By that I mean that we were just two young people from the working class who wanted to express themselves through music.
It was in high school when we realized that our future was not very promising, because of the global economic system that has our class always struggling to survive.
This is how Excluded were born in 2008, specifically in the bedroom of Dany and Dave, lovers of music, especially street punk, and with revolutionary convictions in favor of the oppressed and against the global elite. In that room, the first songs were generated that would give rise to our first album material.
This first material expresses the anger of the students and working class youth, which Dave and Dany acquire by participating in historical moments of the movement, taking their ideas to political action, such as the Conscious Struggle Block, that Dave was a part of, and Dany in the 2006 social struggle in Oaxaca, both against a government that attacked the people.
Taking into account that we both studied at the UNAM (Universidad Autonoma de México), our alma mater, which describes a long history of social struggle for students and workers, but also for exclusion, which is generated by questioning your environment; such as salary, education, or cultural imposition. Because by questioning the pre-established system, development opportunities are shortened, you are marginalized, you are excluded.
How would you define the sound of The Excluded?
Totally street punk, which encompasses all of our musical tastes, and is where the sounds of internationalist youth coming from the streets are embedded, from Ska to Hardcore.
I would like to know about their musical influences but also cultural ones in general, since from my perspective, all knowledge is transferred to music.
Our musical influence is diverse, which we describe as the music of the oppressed in general terms, and which is the one that attracts us the most. In that sense, everything that comes from the underground and goes against the powers that keep us precarious is welcome, both in the past and present. It can be Jamaican Music, blues, Psychobilly, Hardcore, to name a few.
As for the cultural aspect, we are primarily influenced by our environment, which is the Latin American context, in which cultural variety is immense. Just in the pre-Hispanic times of this land, there were the Mayans, the Mexica, the Toltecs, etc. All of this when mixed with the West, forms what we know as Mexico today, and we in turn add punk, because it is music and the lifestyle with which we most identify. Not overlooking the international literary influence that has marked us; from Flores Magón to Rosa Luxemburg, from Marx to Osvaldo Bayer, etc., because it is literature, and that one is read first, no matter what it is.
What experiences has actively participating in the Mexican punk movement brought you?
We truly believe that the work, academic, and musical experience that all members of The Excluded have, have marked our path when participating in the punk movement, through which we have learned a lot and have gained respect for others. That is, of the 8 billion habitants on earth, most of us are poor, so we must first understand what happens in the day to day of others, because we cannot go to a place and say how things are done authoritatively or vice versa. Instead, we have learned that it is best to participate from your own front and share what you have, be it music, cinema, literature, or whatever you do, to build a better common path and a better scene.
I know that relatively recently they crossed the pond, it is not the first time they have played on international stages, but the cultural differences with Europe are more contrasting, so I would like to know what learnings did they gain from their tour of the old continent?
The most representative of the trip was meeting people who taught us their culture, music, scene, thought, way of life, or better said; that opened their doors to us. With this, we had the opportunity to learn about new customs, habits, places, ways of being, organizing, and looking at life.
For us, the organization that they have over in Europe for doing punk concerts is first class, while maintaining the do-it-yourself ethic. In addition, the respect that they have for the time and work of each participant is surprising, because we know the effort that is required to carry out, and punctually too, any activity within the punk movement.
Talk about your new projects, and how will The Excluded look a few years from now?
We currently have new recorded material, entitled Legions of War, which came out on vinyl and CD. This new album was released by Ronce Records of France, Potential Hardcore of Spain, Emergency Records of Czech Republic, and of course Bam Bam Records of Mexico. Which, due to the pandemic, we have not been able to premiere live in all the places that we want.
In the same way, two new videos from this material have come out. These are I Support the Rain and World War, which can be enjoyed on YouTube, that is, we continue working despite global difficulties, and we hope to do so for years.
And by way of a farewell, we visualize ourselves punking for life, we will continue doing tours, we want to reach more countries, continue recording, and above all, bring joy to the hearts of the international working class, every year that life allows us to. So no matter where we are, our energy will be directed towards it, because for those who have supported us, listened to us, or read our work, for them, we will continue right here.

DER INTERNATIONALE AKTIVISMUS VON THE EXCLUDED
Offensichtlich aus einer radikalen Perspektive heraus und ganz im Sinne ihrer Ideale beschlossen die Brüder Daniel und David vor einigen Jahren, The Excluded zu gründen, eine Punkband mit Ska-Anklängen. Es gelang ihnen, einen besonderen Sound zu erreichen, der, wenn man ihn live erlebt, vor Energie und Wut zugleich überläuft, ein Phänomen, das ich gerne als kathartisch bezeichne.
Die Band besteht derzeit aus David (Gesang), Dany (Gitarre), Poncho (Bass), & Pats (Schlagzeug). Mit der Unterstützung von Bam Records nahmen sie 2010 ihr erstes Album mit dem Titel Working Class Punx & Skins United auf, auf dem sie ihre vollständige Ablehnung der internationalen Politik, die die Rechte der Arbeiterbewegung auf der ganzen Welt mit Füßen tritt, festhalten.
Es ist immer ein Sieg, wenn eine mexikanische Band international anerkannt wird, und zweifellos steckt hinter dieser Tatsache eine Menge Arbeit und Mühe.
Als ich also die Nachricht hörte, dass The Excluded auf Europatournee gehen, war ich sehr glücklich. Dany, mit dem ich Gespräche und mehr als ein Bier geteilt habe, stimmte zu, mir ein Interview zu geben.
Erzähl uns ein wenig über die Geschichte von The Excluded. Wie kam es zur Gründung der Band?
Die Band entstand aus der sozio-politischen Unzufriedenheit, die es in Lateinamerika seit Jahrhunderten gibt. Damit meine ich, dass wir einfach zwei junge Leute aus der Arbeiterklasse waren, die sich durch Musik ausdrücken wollten.
Es war in der Highschool, als wir realisierten, dass unsere Zukunft nicht sehr vielversprechend war, wegen des globalen Wirtschaftssystems, das unsere Klasse immer um das Überleben kämpfen lässt.
So wurde Excluded im Jahr 2008 geboren, und zwar im Schlafzimmer von Dany und Dave, als Liebhaber von Musik, vor allem von Streetpunk, und mit revolutionären Überzeugungen zugunsten der Unterdrückten und gegen die globale Elite. In diesem Zimmer entstanden die ersten Songs, aus denen unser erstes Albummaterial entstehen sollte.
Dieses erste Material drückt die Wut der Studenten und der Arbeiterjugend aus, die sich Dave und Dany durch die Teilnahme an historischen Momenten der Bewegung aneignen, indem sie ihre Ideen in die politische Aktion einbringen, wie z.B. der Conscious Struggle Block, dem Dave angehörte, und Dany im sozialen Kampf 2006 in Oaxaca, beide gegen eine Regierung, die das Volk angriff.
Wenn man bedenkt, dass wir beide an der UNAM (Universidad Autonoma de México) studiert haben, unserer Alma Mater, die eine lange Geschichte des sozialen Kampfes für Studenten und Arbeiter beschreibt, aber auch für die Ausgrenzung, die dadurch entsteht, dass man sein Umfeld in Frage stellt; wie z.B. Gehalt, Bildung oder kulturelle Zumutungen. Denn indem man das vorgegebene System in Frage stellt, werden die Entwicklungsmöglichkeiten verkürzt, man wird marginalisiert, man wird ausgeschlossen.
Wie würdest Du den Sound von EXCLUDED beschreiben?
Totaler Streetpunk, der alle unsere Musikgeschmäcker umfasst und in dem der Sound der internationalistischen Jugend von der Straße kommt, von Ska bis Hardcore, eingebettet ist.
Ich würde gerne etwas über eure musikalischen Einflüsse erfahren, aber auch über kulturelle Einflüsse im Allgemeinen, denn aus meiner Sicht wird alles Wissen auf die Musik übertragen.
Unser musikalischer Einfluss ist vielfältig, was wir ganz allgemein als die Musik der Unterdrückten bezeichnen, die uns am meisten anzieht. In diesem Sinne ist alles willkommen, was aus dem Untergrund kommt und sich gegen die Mächte richtet, die uns prekär halten, sowohl in der Vergangenheit als auch in der Gegenwart. Das kann jamaikanische Musik sein, Blues, Psychobilly, Hardcore, um nur einige zu nennen.
Was den kulturellen Aspekt angeht, so werden wir in erster Linie von unserer Umgebung beeinflusst, nämlich dem lateinamerikanischen Kontext, in dem die kulturelle Vielfalt immens ist. Allein in der vorspanischen Zeit dieses Landes gab es die Mayas, die Mexica, die Tolteken, etc. All dies, wenn es sich mit dem Westen vermischt, bildet das, was wir heute als Mexiko kennen, und wir wiederum fügen Punk hinzu, denn es ist die Musik und der Lebensstil, mit dem wir uns am meisten identifizieren. Nicht zu übersehen sind die internationalen literarischen Einflüsse, die uns geprägt haben; von Flores Magón bis Rosa Luxemburg, von Marx bis Osvaldo Bayer, usw., denn es ist Literatur, und die wird zuerst gelesen, egal was es ist.
Welche Erfahrungen hat euch die aktive Teilnahme an der mexikanischen Punk-Bewegung gebracht?
Wir glauben wirklich, dass die Arbeit, die akademische und musikalische Erfahrung, die alle Mitglieder von The Excluded haben, unseren Weg bei der Teilnahme an der Punk-Bewegung geprägt haben, durch die wir viel gelernt und Respekt für andere gewonnen haben. Das heißt, von den 8 Milliarden Einwohnern auf der Erde sind die meisten von uns arm, also müssen wir erst einmal verstehen, was im Alltag der anderen passiert, denn wir können nicht an einen Ort gehen und autoritär sagen, wie die Dinge gemacht werden oder andersherum. Stattdessen haben wir gelernt, dass es am besten ist, von der eigenen Front aus zu partizipieren und das, was man hat, zu teilen, sei es Musik, Kino, Literatur oder was auch immer man macht, um einen besseren gemeinsamen Weg und eine bessere Szene aufzubauen.
Ich weiß, dass ihr erst vor relativ kurzer Zeit den großen Teich überquert habt, es ist nicht das erste Mal, dass ihr auf internationalen Bühnen gespielt habt, aber die kulturellen Unterschiede zu Europa sind doch eher kontrastreich, daher würde ich gerne wissen, welche Lehren ihr aus eurer Tournee auf dem alten Kontinent gezogen habt?
Das Repräsentativste an der Reise war die Begegnung mit Menschen, die uns ihre Kultur, Musik, Szene, Denkweise, Lebensweise lehrten, oder besser gesagt; die uns ihre Türen öffneten. So hatten wir die Möglichkeit, neue Bräuche, Gewohnheiten, Orte, Arten zu sein, zu organisieren und das Leben zu betrachten, kennenzulernen.
Für uns ist die Organisation, die sie in Europa haben, um Punk-Konzerte zu veranstalten, erstklassig, während sie die Do-it-yourself-Ethik beibehalten. Außerdem ist der Respekt, den sie vor der Zeit und der Arbeit eines jeden Teilnehmers haben, überraschend, denn wir wissen, welche Anstrengung nötig ist, um eine Aktivität innerhalb der Punk-Bewegung durchzuführen, und das auch noch pünktlich.
Sprechen Sie über neue Projekte, und wie wird The Excluded in ein paar Jahren aussehen?
Wir haben derzeit neues aufgenommenes Material mit dem Titel Legions of War, das auf Vinyl und CD herauskam. Dieses neue Album wurde von Ronce Records aus Frankreich, Potential Hardcore aus Spanien, Emergency Records aus der Tschechischen Republik und natürlich Bam Bam Records aus Mexiko veröffentlicht. Wobei wir aufgrund der Pandemie nicht in der Lage waren, es an allen Orten live vorzustellen, die wir wollten.
Ebenso sind zwei neue Videos aus diesem Material herausgekommen. Das sind “I Support the Rain” und “World War”, die auf YouTube zu sehen sind, d.h. wir arbeiten trotz globaler Schwierigkeiten weiter, und wir hoffen, dass wir das noch jahrelang tun werden.
Und zum Abschied stellen wir uns vor, dass wir ein Leben lang punken werden, wir werden weiterhin Touren machen, wir wollen mehr Länder erreichen, weiterhin Aufnahmen machen und vor allem die Herzen der internationalen Arbeiterklasse erfreuen, jedes Jahr, das das Leben uns erlaubt. Also egal wo wir sind, unsere Energie wird darauf gerichtet sein, denn für diejenigen, die uns unterstützt haben, uns zugehört haben oder unsere Arbeit gelesen haben, für sie werden wir genau hier weitermachen.

EL ACTIVISMO INTERNACIONAL DE EXCLUDED
Desde una perspectiva radical evidentemente y muy acorde a sus ideales los hermanos Dani y David deciden formar hace algunos años la banda de punk Excluded con tintes de Ska logran obtener un sonido especial, que al experimentarse en vivo, se desborda de energía y furia al mismo tiempo, un fenómeno al cual me gusta denominar catártico.
La banda está integrada en la actualidad por David (Voz) Dany (Guitarra) Poncho (Bajo) & Pats (Batería) Con el apoyo del sello Bam Bam Records grabaron en 2010 su primer álbum titulado Working class Punx & Skins United, dónde plasman su total repudio a las políticas internacionales que pisotean los derechos del movimiento obrero en el mundo.
Siempre es una victoria que una banda mexicana sea reconocida a nivel internacional y sin duda detrás de este hecho hay mucho trabajo y esfuerzo.
Por lo que en cuanto escuche las noticias de que Excluded se iba de Tour por Europa, me alegro mucho. Dani con quién he compartido platicas y más de una cerveza, accedió a darme una entrevista.
Hablen un poco sobre la historia de Excluded ¿cómo se genera la banda?
La banda surgió por el descontento socio-político que se vive en Latinoamérica desde hace siglos. Con ello quiero decir que sólo éramos dos jóvenes de la clase trabajadora que querían expresarse través de la música.
Fue en la preparatoria cuando nos dimos que nuestro futuro no era muy prometedor, por el sistema económico mundial que tiene a nuestra clase siempre sobreviviendo.
Es así como nace Excluded en el 2008, puntualmente en el dormitorio de Dany y Dave, amantes de la música, en especial el Street Punk y la convicción revolucionaria a favor de los oprimidos y contra la élite global. En aquel cuarto, se generaron las primeras canciones que darían origen a nuestro primer material discográfico.
Aquel material expresa la rabia de la juventud estudiantil y trabajadora, que Dave y Dany adquieren al ser partícipes de su momento histórico, llevando sus ideas a la acción política, tal como el Bloque de Lucha Consciente, donde Dave formó parte y Dany en la lucha social del 2006 en Oaxaca, ambos contra un gobierno que atentaba contra el pueblo.
Tomando en cuenta que nuestra escuela fue la UNAM (Universidad Autónoma de México), nuestra alma máter, la cual cuenta con una larga historia de lucha social estudiantil y trabajadora, pero también por la exclusión, que se genera por el cuestionamiento de tu entorno; como el salario, la educación o la imposición cultural. Porque al cuestionar el sistema preestablecido, las oportunidades de desarrollo se acortan, te marginan y te excluyen.
¿Cómo definirían el sonido de Excluded?
Totalmente Street Punk, que es, donde se engloban todos nuestros gustos musicales y se ajustan los sonidos callejeros de la juventud internacionalista, desde el Ska hasta el Hardcore.
Me gustaría conocer sus influencias musicales pero también culturales en general, ya que desde mi perspectiva todo conocimiento se traslada hacia la música.
Nuestra influencia musical es variada, misma que englobamos como la música de los oprimidos en términos generales y que es la que más nos atrae. En ese sentido, todo lo que venga de los de abajo y que vaya contra el poder que nos mantiene en la precariedad es bienvenida, tanto en el pasado como ahora. Puede ser la Música Jamaicana, el Blues, Psychobilly, Hardcore, por mencionar algunos.
Desde el aspecto cultural, nos vemos influenciados primeramente por nuestro entorno, que es el contexto latinoamericano, en el cual la variedad cultural es inmensa. Tan solo en los tiempos prehispánicos de esta tierra, existían ya culturas muy avanzadas como los mayas, los mexicas, toltecas, etc., todo ello al mezclarse con occidente forma lo que conocemos hoy como México, y nosotros a su vez le agregamos el Punk, pues es la música y estilo de vida con el que más nos identificamos. No sin pasar por alto la influencia literaria internacional que nos ha marcado; de Flores Magón a Rosa Luxemburgo, de Marx a Osvaldo Bayer, etc., porque es literatura, y esta primero se lee, no importa cuál sea.
¿Qué experiencias les ha aportado participar activamente en el movimiento de punk mexicano?
Creemos fielmente que la experiencia laboral, académica y musical que tenemos todos los integrantes de Excluded, han marcado nuestro camino al participar en el movimiento punk. La cual nos ha aportado un gran aprendizaje y respeto por el otro lado, es decir, de los 8mil millones de habitantes que hay en la tierra, la mayoría somos pobres, entonces primero debemos entender lo que sucede en el día a día del otro, pues no podemos llegar a un lugar y decir cómo se hacen las cosas autoritariamente o viceversa. En su lugar hemos aprendido que lo mejor es participar desde tu frente y compartir lo que tienes, ya sea música, cine, literatura o cualquier cosa que hagas, para construir un mejor camino común y una mejor escena.
Sé que relativamente hace poco tiempo brincaron el charco, no es la primera vez que tocan en escenarios internacionales, pero la diferencia cultural con Europa es más contrastante, por lo que me gustaría saber ¿Qué aprendizajes se llevan de su Tour por el viejo continente?
Lo más representativo del viaje fue conocer personas que nos enseñaron su cultura, música, escena, pensamiento, manera de vivir o mejor dicho; que nos abrieron sus puertas. Con ello tuvimos la oportunidad de conocer nuevas costumbres, hábitos, lugares, formas de ser, de organizar y de ver la vida.
Para nosotros la organización que se tiene en Europa para hacer los conciertos Punk es de primer nivel, al mismo tiempo que se mantiene la ética del Do It Yourself. Además el respeto que se tiene por el tiempo y trabajo de cada participante es sorprendente, pues sabemos del esfuerzo que se requiere para llevar a cabo y puntualmente cualquier actividad dentro del movimiento punk.
Hablen de sus proyectos nuevos y de ¿Cómo se visualizan Excluded en unos años?
Actualmente tenemos un nuevo material discográfico titulado Legions of War, que salió en formato vinyl y en CD. Este nuevo álbum fue editado por las disqueras Ronce Records de Francia, Potencial Hardcore de España, Emergency Records de República Checa y por su puesto Bam Bam Records de México. El cual, debido a la Pandemia no se ha podido estrenar en vivo en todos los lugares que queremos.
De igual manera han salido dos videos nuevos de ese material, los cuales son Soporté la Lluvia y Guerra Mundial, mismos que se pueden disfrutar en YouTube, es decir, seguimos trabajando a pesar de las dificultades globales y esperamos hacerlo por años.
Y bueno a manera de despedida, pues nos visualizamos punkeando para toda la vida, seguiremos haciendo tours, queremos llegar a más países, seguir grabando y sobre todo llevar alegría a los corazones de la clase trabajadora internacional todos los años que la vida nos lo permita. Pues, donde quiera que estemos, nuestra energía será encaminada en ello, porque por aquell@s que nos han apoyado, escuchado o leído, por ell@s, nosotros seguiremos aquí.
