We are living in times of female empowerment and this is undoubtedly transferred to the alternative music scene in Mexico. I have always been captivated by all- girl bands, since I was a teenager listening to L7 or Bikini Killer, I have highly respected and valued their presence within the underground scenes.
No one can deny what a touch of estrogen can do to music for this reason I was fascinated to learn of the existence of the first all- girl Mexican Psychobilly band.

In the beginning the line-up was Kat on double bass, Hanny on guitar and Psyclona on drums, they gave shows since 2014 making their way among the local psychobilly bands in Mexico, sharing the stage with bands like Klax from Austin, Texas in one of the biggest events from Wreck to Party Productions all the way to playing with the iconic band Torment.

Today the band is made up of Kat, Arturo and Sajid, both former members of the Billy Phantom band but we cannot deny that thanks to the leadership of the band Kat the feminist essence of the band is still valid.
For Kat, who like many women was influenced by bands of the Riott Girl movement of the 90’s, her process as a musician was something natural, she became a vocalist in punk bands since 1999. She lived 2 years in LA California where she heard for the first time Psychobilly, bands like The Meteors, The Quakes, King Kurt and Calavera topped of her list of preferences. In 2002 he began to play the guitar and because his influences are mainly Rockabilly and Psychobilly in 2006 he decided to play the genre’s characteristic instrument tololoche.

We started a conversation, to know a little more about this project, she enthusiastic and kind all the time describes the Psychobilly scene and her own perspective as an active part.

How is the band generated, what does the name of the band mean to you, and if you can describe to us what the lyrics of the T REXXX songs are about?

The band emerged at the beginning of 2014 starting as a project for women before the name of the band was T rex Babies (the name arises from the search for something related to prehistory and the Babies thing we think could give the name a feminine touch) having several girls from the scene in their lineup, also some musician friends from the scene supported the band, we released a single called “Psycho Short Arms”
The lyrics speak of real situations that we have lived and others of invented stories, for example the single that came out in mid-2020 “Trip Around Madness” talks about the trip we made to London in 2018, we have another song called “Soul Eaterz” that deals with of souls that visit us and eat brains, we write lyrics based on some of the classic Psychobilly themes “Party, Horror & Beer”

What do you think of the Psychobilly scene in Mexico compared to other scenes?

Psychobilly in Mexico is doing very well, every year new and good bands are formed, there is much better sound, constant evolution and commitment. The bands of yesteryear continue to sound and contribute to the scene as well.
There are many similarities with other foreign scenes but perhaps the desired projection has not been achieved worldwide, more work is needed from our Mexican groups and I think that is what has put us at a disadvantage.

What do you think of the importance of women as part of the Psychobilly scene and in particular how you live it as a musician and leader of a band?

Well, in Mexico there are several women who have been interacting in different bands and I think the importance lies in the fact that the scene is enriched by what each one of us has contributed to our projects, there are still few, but I think we are a good motivation for other girls dare to play, since I played in Psychobilly bands I have perceived the support of the members, as well as friends from other bands and the general public.

How is your creative process of composing music / lyrics?

It consists in that each one of us contributes mainly stories that we invent and some experiences. Together we are putting together the songs with the proposed ideas.

What do you think is the nuance that T REXXX brings to Psychobilly?

I think it is the perspective of a mature, reliable and committed band that supports the Mexican scene, especially focused on making ourselves known on the world scene.

Finally, tell us about the new projects of T REXXX

We were playing local events for a year and a half or so, we took a break and in 2019 we took up the project with Arturo (Billy phantom, Mad skeletons), who joins the band as a guitarist, we recorded an EP called “Prehistoric Insane Brains “In early 2020, we played several local events and were able to open the legendary band Torment’s event at Gato Calavera in February 2020; After that, Sajid (Billy phantom) joins the drums and several changes are made between them, part of the name remaining only as T Rexxx, we released a single called “Trip Around Madness” and we are working on new material with the idea of ​​releasing a second EP for the end of the current year, as well as being able to perform live very soon.

Niemand kann leugnen, was ein Hauch von Östrogen in der Musik bewirken kann. Aus diesem Grund war ich fasziniert, als ich von der Existenz der ersten mexikanischen Psychobilly-Band erfuhr, die nur aus Mädchen bestand.
Am Anfang bestand die Besetzung aus Kat am Bass, Hanny an der Gitarre und Psyclona am Schlagzeug. Seit 2014 geben sie Konzerte und haben sich ihren Weg unter die lokalen Psychobilly-Bands in Mexiko gebahnt, teilten sich die Bühne mit Bands wie Klax aus Austin, Texas und bei einer der größten Veranstaltungen von Wreck to Party Productions und spielten sogar mit der Kultband Torment.

Heute besteht die Band aus Kat, Arturo und Sajid, beide ehemalige Mitglieder der Billy Phantom Band, aber wir können nicht leugnen, dass dank der Führung der Band durch Kat die feministische Essenz der Band immer noch hoch gehalten wird.

Wir hatten im Gespräch die Möglichkeit mehr über ihr Projekt zu erfahren. Begeistert und freundlich beschreibt sie durchgehend die Psychobilly-Szene und speziell ihre eigene Perspektive als aktiver Teil.

Wie entstand die Band, was bedeutet der Name der Band für euch, und könnt ihr uns beschreiben, worum es in den Texten der T REXXX-Songs geht?

Die Band entstand Anfang 2014 und begann als ein Projekt für Frauen, bevor der Name der Band T rex Babies war. Der Name ergibt sich aus der Suche nach einem Stück, das mit unserer Vorgeschichte zu tun hat und Babies denken wir, gibt dem Namen einen weiblichen Touch, da wir mehrere Mädchen aus der Szene im Lineup hatten und auch einige Musikerfreunde aus der Szene unterstützten die Band, wir veröffentlichten eine Single namens “Psycho Short Arms.

Was denkt ihr über die Psychobilly-Szene in Mexiko im Vergleich zu anderen Szenen?

Dem Psychobilly in Mexiko geht es sehr gut, jedes Jahr werden neue und gute Bands gegründet, es gibt einen viel besseren Sound, ständige Weiterentwicklung und Engagement. Auch die Bands von früher erklingen weiter und tragen zur Szene bei.
Es gibt viele Ähnlichkeiten mit anderen ausländischen Szenen, aber vielleicht ist die gewünschte Projektion weltweit nicht erreicht worden, es ist mehr Arbeit von unseren mexikanischen Gruppen nötig und ich denke, das ist es, was uns benachteiligt hat.

Wie schätzt du die Bedeutung von Frauen in der Psychobilly-Szene ein und wie lebst du sie im Besonderen als Musikerin und Frontfrau einer Band?

Nun, in Mexiko gibt es mehrere Frauen, die in verschiedenen Bands mitgewirkt haben, und ich denke, die Bedeutung liegt darin, dass die Szene durch das, was jede von uns zu unseren Projekten beigetragen hat, bereichert wird, es sind immer noch wenige, aber ich denke, wir sind eine gute Motivation für andere Mädchen, die sich trauen, zu spielen. Seit ich in Psychobilly-Bands gespielt habe, habe ich die Unterstützung der Mitglieder wahrgenommen, ebenso wie die von Freunden aus anderen Bands und der allgemeinen Öffentlichkeit.

Wie sieht dein kreativer Prozess beim Komponieren von Musik/Texten aus?

Was denkst du, ist die Nuance, die T REXXX in den Psychobilly einbringt?

Ich denke, es ist die Perspektive einer reifen, zuverlässigen und engagierten Band, die die mexikanische Szene unterstützt und sich besonders darauf konzentriert, uns auf der Weltszene bekannt zu machen.

Estamos viviendo tiempos de empoderamiento femenino y esto se traslada sin duda alguna al panorama musical alternativo en México. Siempre me han cautivado las bandas enteramente formadas por chicas, desde mi adolescencia escuchando a L7 o a Bikini Killer, he respetado y valorado mucho su presencia dentro de las escenas underground.

Nadie puede negar lo que un toque de estrógeno puede hacerle a la música por esta razón quedé fascinada al saber de la existencia de la primer banda de Psychobilly mexicana formada por chicas.
En sus inicios la alineación era Kat en el contrabajo, Hanny en la guitarra y Psyclona en la batería, dieron shows desde 2014 abriéndose camino entre las bandas locales de psychobilly en México llegando a compartir escenario con bandas como Klax de Austin, Texas en uno de los eventos más importantes de Wreck a party productions hasta llegar a tocar con la banda emblemática Torment.

Hoy en día la banda está integrada por Kat, Arturo y Sajid ambos ex miembros de la banda Billy Phantom pero no podemos negar que gracias a la lidereza de la banda Kat la escencia feminista de la banda sigue vigente.
Para Kat quien al igual que muchas mujeres fue influenciada por bandas del movimiento Riott Girl de los 90’s, su proceso como músico fue algo natural, se convirtió en vocalista de bandas de punk desde 1999. Vivió 2 años en L.A California dónde escuchó por primera vez Psychobilly, bandas como The Meteors, The Quakes, King Kurt y Calavera encabezaban y en 2002 empezó a tocar la guitarra. Y debido a que sus influencias principalmente son Rockabilly y Psychobilly en 2006 se decide por tocar el tololoche instrumento característico del género.

Entablamos una conversación, para conocer un poco más sobre este proyecto, ella entusiasta y amable todo el tiempo nos describe la escena Psychobilly y su propia perspectiva como parte activa.

¿Cómo se genera la banda, que significa para ti el nombre de la banda, y si nos puedes describir de qué van las letras de las canciones de T REXXX?

La banda surge a principios del 2014 iniciando como proyecto mujeres antes el nombre de la banda era T rex Babies (el nombre surge a partir de la búsqueda de algo relacionado a la prehistoria y lo de Babies pensamos que podría dar el toque femenino al nombre) teniendo a varias chicas de la escena en su alineación, también algunos amigos músicos de la escena apoyaron a la banda, lanzamos un sencillo llamado “Psycho Short Arms”

¿Qué opinas de la escena Psychobilly en México comparada con otras escenas?

El Psychobilly en México va muy bien, cada año se forman nuevas y buenas bandas, hay mucho mejor sonido, evolución constante y compromiso. Las bandas de antaño siguen sonando y aportando a la escena también.
Existen muchas similitudes con otras escenas extranjeras pero quizás la proyección deseada no se ha alcanzado a nivel mundial, se necesita más trabajo de nuestros grupos mexicanos y creo que es lo que nos ha puesto desventaja.
¿Qué opinas de la importancia de la mujer como parte de la escena Psychobilly y en particular como lo vives como músico y líder de una banda?
Pues en México hay varias mujeres que hemos estado interactuando en diferentes bandas y creo que la importancia radica en que la escena se enriquece con lo que hemos aportado cada una a nuestros proyectos, hay aún pocas, pero creo que somos buena motivación para que otras chicas se animen a tocar, desde que toco en bandas de Psychobilly he percibido el apoyo de los integrantes, como también de los amigos de otras bandas y del público en general.

¿Cómo es tu proceso creativo de composición música /letras?

Consiste en que cada uno aportamos principalmente historias que inventamos y algunas vivencias. Entre todos vamos armando las canciones con las ideas propuestas.

¿Cuál crees que es el matiz que T REXXX aporta al Psychobilly?

Creo que es la perspectiva de una banda madura, confiable y comprometida que apoya la escena mexicana sobre todo enfocada a darnos a conocer también en la escena mundial

Por último Háblanos de los nuevos proyectos de T REXXX.

Estuvimos tocando en eventos locales durante un año y medio más o menos, tomamos un descanso y en 2019 retomamos el proyecto con Arturo (Billy phantom, Mad skeletons), quién se une a la banda como guitarrista, grabamos un E.P llamado “Prehistoric Insane Brains” a principios del 2020, tocamos en varios eventos locales y pudimos abrir el evento de la legendaria banda Torment en el Gato Calavera en febrero del 2020; posterior a eso se une Sajid (Billy phantom) en la batería y se hacen varios cambios entre ellos parte del nombre quedando solo como T Rexxx, lanzamos un sencillo llamado “Trip Around Madness” y estamos trabajando en nuevo material con la idea de sacar un segundo E.P para finales del año en curso, al igual que poder presentarnos en vivo muy pronto.
