The master of Swiss darkwave Carlo Onda is back with an outstanding album. It is “Lomo Filter Wave” as he writes himself, which means a musical pleasure that seeks its equal.

I was sitting in the train, had a good 7 hour drive ahead of me and finally found the time to listen through the stacking new promo music. Not quite, because with the first album I had chosen, I spent the whole train ride. Already with track 1 “Bad To The Bone” of the new album EURO89, Carlo caught me as usual. I was a little surprised by the tracklist, because in contrast to the last album, the titles promised thematically a little less “darkness” than the predecessor “Sturm+Drang”. But the theme remains classic Carlo Onda also on EURO89. Themes adapted to current events and nowadays life with a good portion of 80s style.

Musically, however, much remains the same, which is not bad, because we refer to the attributes of complexity and varity. And while at the window next to me the landscape of North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse and Bavaria passes by, the Swiss musician also manages to conjure up huge, varied musical landscapes in my head, from which I don´t want to leave. “Shiny and over-compressed” is what Carlos himself calls it and explains on Bandcamp that he has taken the new retro filters as an inpiration, that can now be found everywhere in the social media and “want to create meaning and transfigure”. A good paraphrase, which also applies 100 percent.

Carlo gets support from the great Blanche Biau and Alisha Lang, who give the songs their own wonderful charm. Overall, the album convinces over all things with its concept. So much so that the 7 hour drive was then spent musically exclusively with EURO89.

Der Meister des schweizerischen Darkwave Carlo Onda ist zurück mit einem überragendem Album. Es ist “Lomo Filter Wave” wie er selber schreibt, das heißt ein Musikgenuss der seines gleichen sucht.

Ich saß im Zug, hatte gute 7 Stunden Fahrt vor mir und fand endlich die Zeit, mich durch die stapelnden Neuzugänge zu hören. Nicht ganz, denn mit dem ersten Album das ich mir ausgesucht hatte, verbrachte ich dann die ganze Zugfahrt. Schon mit Track 1 “Bad To The Bone” des neuen Albums EURO89, fing mich Carlo wie gewohnt ein. Ein wenig überrascht hatte mich die Tracklist schon, denn im Gegensatz zum letzten Album, versprachen die Titel thematisch etwas weniger “Dunkelheit” als beim Vorgänger “Sturm+Drang”. Doch bleibt die Thematik auch bei EURO89 klassisch Carlo Onda. Dem aktuellen Zeitgeschehen angepasste Themen mit einer ordentlichen Portion 80s eben.

Musikalisch hingegen bleibt vieles gleich, was nicht schlimm ist, denn wir beziehen uns auf die Attribute Vielschichtigkeit und Komplexität. Und während am Fenster neben mir die Landschaft Nordrhein-Westfalens, Hessens und Bayern vorbei zieht, schafft es der Schweizer Musiker in meinem Kopf ebenfalls riesige, abwechslungsreiche musikalische Landschaften zu zaubern, aus denen ich gar nicht mehr raus möchte. “Glänzend und überkomprimiert” nennt es Carlos selber und erklärt auf Bandcamp, das er sich dazu die neuen Retro-Filter als Beispiel genommen hat die man nun an jeder Ecke in den sozialen Medien antrifft und “Bedeutung schaffen wollen und verklären”. Eine gute Umschreibung, die auch zu 100 Prozent zutrifft.

Unterstützung erhält Carlo von der großartigen Blanche Biau und Alisha Lang, die den Songs ihren ganz eigenen wundervollen Charme verleihen. Insgesamt überzeugt das Album über alle Dinge mit seinem Konzept. So sehr, das die 7 Stunden Fahrt dann doch musikalisch ausschließlich mit EURO89 verbracht wurden.
